 Amitermes: Only one species of this genus, Amitermes evuncifer, is commonly found causing damage. The galleries of Amitermes spp. are characteristically lined with dark brown or black “carton” with a smooth dull surface. Tunnels from one chamber to another are usually about 1.5mm. in diameter.

 Microcerotermes: The mode of damage by this termite genus is similar in appearance to the workings of Amitermes, but smaller in size. The tunnel openings is about 1.0mm. in diameter. The carton lining is usually browner in colour.

 Coptotermes: The workings of this genus are usually lined with pale brownish or grayish fecal materials with a patchy variegated appearance. Spaces left by the removal of wood or plant tissues may be filled with carton. Majority of attacks by this genus are internal in more matured trees, either by entry from below ground up to the center of the trunk, or by means of a covered runway up the tree to a branch scar or crack giving access to the interior.

 Trinervitermes: This genus is primarily a grass feeder. Grasses are cut to small lengths (about 5mm.) and carried back to the mound for storage. Foraging usually takes place in the open during the cooler hours of the mornings and evenings. Crop plants in the grass family (especially rice) are prone to attack by members of this termite genus.

 Neotermes: Neotermes is represented by only one known species in Nigeria. This species is Neotermes aburiensis. This is a dry wood termite, confined to dead branches on trees, and having no contact with the ground. They are commonly found attacking Cocoa trees in Nigeria. The tunnels in the attacked wood often contain an accumulation of dry, oval fecal pellets.

 Cryptotermes: This is also a dry wood termite, confined to construction timbers, such as roofing timbers on house tops, doors and window frames, as well as wooden furniture. From observation, it is common to see accumulations of dry, fine, neat, spindle-shaped fecal pellets beneath the attacked structures, which may appear intact externally.

It is much wiser if you are going to get your measurements wrong – not that it is wise at all to measure your windows wrong in the first place – but if you do ensure that you don’t measure it so that it is too large for the opening. Remember, within reason, you can fill the gaps around the window if it is slightly too small for the opening but it is much more of a problem if when you come to fit your window you find that it is too large for the opening you have made or of the existing window opening.
